"The best things come from relentless experimentation, free from thought and limit. It begins with inspiration, which drives us to create something new; and the resulting effects of those countless experiments are what can lead us to innovation."

This is one part of a series of scenes from Venice. I drew inspiration from the ink drawings and calligraphy of China and Japan, mixed with inspiration from graffiti art and graphic art, as well. With hopes of innovation, I made connections of the more ancient art to graffiti art in the shared quickness in gesture and mastery in craft.
I experimented with priming cold-pressed watercolor paper with Gesso, and then with layering an ink drawing using India ink over subtle fields of color in the washes. This technique yielded both the mood and atmosphere that I sought, while retaining the careful gesture I sought to capture in my strokes.

(UPDATE: This piece has been a big seller. The original was framed and sold, but I began experimenting with making reproductions, printing on museum rag archival paper. Many requests came in for the reproduction. Moral of the story is: You can do amazing things with a scanner and inkjet photo printer.)
