Studies - Edie Promo

"Sienna Miller as Edie."
This is a promotional concept for a documentary based on the life of Edie Sedgwick, and the portrayal of her character in media, particularly film. I referenced a screen shot of Sienna Miller playing Edie Sedgwick in the movie "Factory Girl".

I printed each layer separately on charcoal paper,
which gave the image a silk-screen effect, echoing
a Pop Art/Warhol aesthetic.

"I love trees in the fall, especially when they turn bright yellow, glimmering gold under the sun. I fell in love with the rivers of monstrous streaming shadows cutting through the leaves; and found a certain kind of pleasant somber finding beauty in dying nature placed next to the hardness of human tombs. I captured a sense of loneliness in the figures, as the studium opposing the punctum of the bold, overpowering tones of the leaves."

Parson's Challenge

The object I chose to focus my designs on was a Japanese maple tree in my front yard, which I overlooked in my daily travels.

I wanted to first interpret the tree in a photograph. The idea I wanted to convey through my first perspective was something soft, light, and friendly. I took several photos at different times of day and at different angles to play with composition and lighting. During my interpretation, I found that the strongest composition was the one in which the lamp was in the foreground. The shape of the tree stands out against lightest areas in the snow and sky. Both the tree and the lamp create an asymmetrical balance in the image. I captured the sunlight shining right at the top of the lamp to draw your eye away from the center of the composition. This photograph captures the interesting shape of the tree, while creating a dynamic relationship between the lamp in the foreground and the tree in the middle ground.

This is an image and type poster on the theme of nuclear genocide. I used Adobe Photoshop to combine a photo of myself walking through a cemetery with the found image of a mushroom cloud, and the words: "And then there was one..."

Here, I merged images to create a visual metaphor. The poster is meant to convey, through image, the idea of the last human on earth following the nuclear holocaust. I used bold colors along with an edgy typeface to visually communicate a powerful, socio-political statement in poster form.
